Normally, after finishing second in a 76 player blogger tourney, I’d simply be happy with the cash. But missing out on a TOC seat by that narrow of a margin just plain stings.

Congratulations to DonkeyPuncher.

Life goes on.

All the right reads in the world can’t help you sometimes

Poker 5 Comments »

I’ve always thought of the person who took my chips here as a decent bloggertourney player. But I have to wonder what was going on here. I’m not usually a TPTK donkey, but I was able to figure this hand out, but the end result wasn’t what I hoped.

I don’t advise calling check-raises-all-in on the turn with TPTK, but a little analysis can help you sniff out weaker hands sometimes. This is a case where I did just that, but still lost the hand.

The lesson here is that if you want to play a big hand post-flop, it pays to represent a big hand pre-flop, particularly against vultures who live on pre-flop limps.

Mondays at the Hoy (45101299), Table 11 – 80/160 – No Limit Hold’em – 23:18:48 ET – 2008/04/21
Seat 1: Breeze81 (6,127), is sitting out
Seat 2: dnasty13 (2,670)
Seat 3: PirateLawyer (7,334)
Seat 4: NumbBono (8,885)
Seat 5: lightning36 (4,426)
Seat 6: DaBag (2,885)
PirateLawyer posts the small blind of 80
NumbBono posts the big blind of 160
The button is in seat #2
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to NumbBono [As Kh]
lightning36 calls 160
DaBag folds
Breeze81 folds
dnasty13 folds
PirateLawyer calls 80
NumbBono checks (probably not a good check, but I’m ready to lay this down if it doesn’t hit)
*** FLOP *** [9d Ks 7h] (I hit, now the job is to find out where I’m at in this hand)
PirateLawyer has 15 seconds left to act
PirateLawyer bets 480
NumbBono calls 480 (call and see what develops)
lightning36 folds
*** TURN *** [9d Ks 7h] [6d]
PirateLawyer checks (I’m reading this as weakness)
NumbBono bets 1,150 (pretty sure I’m ahead here, time to get rid of draws)
PirateLawyer raises to 6,694, and is all in

My thoughts on this. I just sat at the table, but I have pretty good idea how PirateLawyer plays these blogger tourneys. I’m ruling out high pocket pairs here based on the preflop limp. That really leaves a set of 6’s, 7’s, or 9’s…or a weird straight or flush draw (maybe a combination of both), or a weaker King.

I’m OK calling here against the draws and the weaker King. I guess there’s always the possibility of two-pair hitting as well. I really should have defined my hand with a pre-flop raise, rather than trying to hide it, but I’m not sure that would have mattered.

In my mind, I’m figuring I’m about a 70-30 favorite to have the better hand. Is that enough of an edge to call? I honestly thought he had K-Q. I was wrong, but my thought process here was pretty close to right.

Of course, all logic says that a check-raise-all-in on the turn is trouble. But I’m funny in that I don’t always follow logic.

NumbBono calls 5,544 (…but I’m not buying it, and I think it’s a weaker King, or an OESD)
PirateLawyer shows [Th Jd] (didn’t expect a double gutter though)
NumbBono shows [As Kh]
*** RIVER *** [9d Ks 7h 6d] [Qd] (Boom)
PirateLawyer shows a straight, King high
NumbBono shows a pair of Kings
PirateLawyer wins the pot (14,828) with a straight, King high
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 14,828 | Rake 0
Board: [9d Ks 7h 6d Qd]
Seat 1: Breeze81 didn’t bet (folded)
Seat 2: dnasty13 (button) didn’t bet (folded)
Seat 3: PirateLawyer (small blind) showed [Th Jd] and won (14,828) with a straight, King high
Seat 4: NumbBono (big blind) showed [As Kh] and lost with a pair of Kings
Seat 5: lightning36 folded on the Flop
Seat 6: DaBag didn’t bet (folded)

I realize I didn’t have to go (nearly) broke here, but I made the right play, and got sucked out on. It happens.

I could easily wonder why someone would put a top 10 stack on the line with a merely a double gutter with one card to come, but I guess I put a top ten stack on the line with TPTK, even though I diagnosed the hand pretty well.

I guess I can chalk this one up to a bluff by PirateLawyer gone bad…gone good. Such is poker.

Texas Holdem Hands

Poker 5 Comments »

Just as there are many hands in Texas Holdem that will win you a lot of money, there are a number of deceptive hands that may lead you into believing that they are profitable when in real fact they will often lose you decent sums of money from your bankroll. The sooner that you learn about the hands that are costing you dearly, the sooner you can start saving yourself from losing money. This article will address the most common hands that novices play with and highlight the reasons as to why they can be dangerous hands to play.

The ‘any two suited cards’ is a very popular hand that all varieties of beginners like to play in an online poker room. A flush is a pretty strong hand in the game of Holdem, and so if you manage to make one there is good chance that you will win a nice bit of money with it. Therefore many new players to the game will be prepared to enter pots with any two cards as long as they are suited just in an attempt to catch a flush at some point during the hand. There are two reasons as to why playing any two suited cards is dangerous.

Firstly, it is not that much more likely that you will make a flush just because your cards are suited. The probability of making a flush in Texas Holdem is pretty low, and so it does not justify calling bet and raises in an attempt to catch one on the flop. On top of this, amateur players will often continue to call bets and raises with bad pot odds to make a flush on future streets, which just adds to the problem of playing such hands. The second reason is that you can catch half a hand like second pair on the flop, and end up losing money to another player that has formed a better pair than you. So by playing random suited cards you are setting yourself up for two great opportunities to leak money, so don’t do it.

Another type of hand that always manages to cause the beginner poker players a problem is the low connecting cards. These are almost identical to the problems caused by any two suited cards and can help players to lose money over the long run. It is not too likely that you will form a straight every time you enter a pot with connecting cards like 5c 6h, so don’t enter the pot under the false pretences that you will. You will simply be losing more money in the long run, as well as losing money in pots where you catch half a hand and your opponent catches a stronger one. So save yourself some money and fold before the flop.

One final hand that amateur players get overly attached to is a rag ace. Rag aces are simply aces that are accompanied by a low ranking holecard below a Ten. The problem that these poker hand rankings cause is that players find it difficult to let the hand go after they pair their ace, and so they will often end up losing a lot of (if not all) of their stack to a player that also makes a pair of aces but with a better kicker. The best way to play these types of hands is to exercise a little self-discipline and fold them before the flop. It is unlikely that you will win a big pot with them, but it is likely that you will lose a big one. Save yourself a bit of money by folding and catch out the other amateur players the next time when you hold a stronger ace than them.

Pushfest…the greatest invention since the poker chip

Here’s the Hand History from the pushfest I won on Friday. Look for the chat comments in BOLD

This is to give those of you who don’t participate in these things an idea of just how much damn fun it is tilting a bunch of donkeys who are playing satellites to satellites for FTP points.

What transpires is 21 hands of absolute nirvana. I tried to cut down the garbage so it would be easier to follow. If you stick it out, and pay attention to the chat comments, it’ll be worth it.

Drunk Blogger Razz

Poker 2 Comments »

So after making a decent run, finishing fourth, in the Riverchasers last night, I hopped on BDR to see what was going on. Drunk Buddy wanted to get a blogger cash game going. I voiced my opinion that blogger Razz would be a better option…and so it was decided.

DRUNK BLOGGER RAZZ

I sat down with a cool $1000 at the .25/.50 table, looking to double up in a few minutes. Then someone else decided to see to it that I wasn’t the biggest stack at the table.

Then Riggs decided to lay into the tourist at the table. This, my friends, was AWESOME.

An absolute blast.

*****************

So I played six blogger tourneys this week, and final tabled four of them. Not a bad showing for the week. I’m into the top ten on the BBT3 leaderboard, so I finally took a look at what prizes were being offered for finishing in the money on the leaderboard. Discovered that 1-5 get cash, no surprise there, but I was amazed to see that 6-20 will get customized FTP jerseys. Very cool. Now I’ll have to decide if I want NumbBono, or NumbBlowMe on the back of my hockey jersey.

The Alcohol Paradox

I drink during these skills series events…to keep myself from getting bored.

I didn’t realize the game had switched from Razz to Stud…because I drank too much.

Out in fourth…because of this.

I was a shorty anyway, but it still bugs me.

Climbing the BBT3 Leaderboard though.

Good Tremendous time on BDR.

Worst…software…ever…

It’s a close race, but at this point, the seventh day of April, 2008, it’s been narrowed down to two candidates.  I-Tunes vs. Windows Vista.

I-Tunes sucks, first off, because they make a great product, the IPod, but they force you to use this crappy software, that is not only unstable, but lacks the features of many similar products before it.

Secondly, I-Tunes wants to put the Apple Safari Browser on my system.  I have no need for this.  FireFox kicks ass, and I don’t need another browser in my life right now.

So Apple, while you’ve cornered the market on great music-listening hardware…you’ve FAILED pretty much everywhere else.  And yes, that includes whatever ventures you have in desktops and laptops.  Anyone who can honestly say they can do more with an I-Mac, or whatever the hell you call your PC these days is an idiot.

Now on to Windows Vista.  This was a dog from the start.  I’ve had my hands on this from the start, and it’s pretty much always sucked.  The out-of-the box experience is terrible, since you have to pretty much OK everything to run…before it runs.  Of course, this is a result of a lot of you idiots executing programs that you’ve received via e-mail, even if they’re from unknown sources.  Microsoft took the safe road, and decided that you weren’t safe from yourselves.

Once you get past that, and you can if you look up how to tweak it, then you have to make sure your hardware can work.  In the past, Microsoft, and the hardware vendors out there, have made sure that backwards-compatibility is possible.  NOT THIS TIME.  Stuff that has only been out for maybe a year or so before Vista came out isn’t working right.  Maybe you’ve gotten lucky, but there’s a lot of people out there who didn’t have that same luck.

Vendors aren’t creating drivers for products that should be supported because they’re too busy working on drivers for the NEXT version of Windows.

Things are getting very messy.  My advice right now, is to build yourself a solid Windows XP Pro based system, and run with it.  If you have an I-Pod…well, you’re at the mercy of Apple.  There are other solutions out there, but they aren’t that great yet.

It’s a shame these companies suck.

How a lot of people spent Saturday night
